New Oriental House: Real Reviews of Asian Cuisine Across the UK

Welcome to New Oriental House

Since 2018, New Oriental House has been the trusted platform for finding and reviewing Asian restaurants, takeaways, and food shops throughout the United Kingdom. We started in Manchester and have grown into a community of food lovers sharing their experiences across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Unlike commercial review sites cluttered with sponsored listings, we focus solely on genuine customer feedback. Every review comes from real diners who have visited these establishments, ordered their food, and want to share their honest thoughts with fellow enthusiasts of Asian cuisine.

Whether you are searching for a family-run Chinese restaurant in Birmingham, a Korean barbecue spot in Edinburgh, or a proper dim sum place in London, our community reviews help you make informed choices. We cover everything from neighbourhood takeaways to special occasion dining.

How Our Review System Works

We believe simplicity leads to honesty. Reviewers rate establishments on food quality, service, value for money, and atmosphere using a straightforward five-point scale. There are no algorithms pushing certain restaurants to the top, just chronological listings of genuine experiences.

Every review must include specific details about what was ordered, when the visit occurred, and what made the experience noteworthy, good or bad. We verify submission details and remove content that appears promotional or suspiciously generic. Our volunteer moderators, all passionate about Asian food culture, check submissions within 48 hours.

  • Food Quality: Taste, freshness, authenticity, portion size
  • Service: Staff friendliness, wait times, attention to detail
  • Value: Price fairness compared to portion and quality
  • Atmosphere: Cleanliness, ambience, comfort, location convenience

Regional Guides and Local Favourites

Our regional guides help you navigate Asian dining across different UK cities and towns. From the bustling Chinatowns of major metropolitan areas to hidden gems in coastal towns, we document the diverse landscape of Asian cuisine in Britain.

The North West section features comprehensive coverage of Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds, where generations of Asian communities have established thriving food scenes. Our Midlands guide explores Birmingham, Nottingham, and Leicester, highlighting both established restaurants and exciting newcomers. London deserves its own extensive section, broken down by borough to help you find great food whether you are in Hackney or Hounslow.

Scotland's growing Asian food culture receives dedicated attention, with Edinburgh and Glasgow leading the way in innovative fusion concepts alongside traditional cooking. We also cover Wales, particularly Cardiff's vibrant student-friendly Asian eateries, and smaller cities across the country where demand for quality Asian food continues to grow.

Cuisine Categories We Cover

Asian cuisine encompasses an incredible range of culinary traditions, and we try to represent that diversity. Chinese restaurants remain the most reviewed category, from Cantonese roast houses to Sichuan specialists. Japanese dining has expanded far beyond sushi bars, with ramen shops, izakayas, and katsu curry houses now common in most cities.

Indian and Pakistani establishments form another major category, though we focus primarily on East and Southeast Asian cuisines to maintain our niche. Thai restaurants have become British high street staples, and we help diners distinguish between chains and independent family operations. Vietnamese, Korean, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Filipino cuisines all receive coverage as these communities establish their culinary presence across the UK.

Submit Your Own Review

We welcome reviews from anyone who has dined at an Asian restaurant or ordered from an Asian takeaway in the UK. Your experience matters, whether you visited a Michelin-listed establishment or a small shop that does excellent lunch boxes for four pounds fifty.

To submit a review, send us an email with the restaurant name, full address including postcode, the date of your visit, what you ordered, and your honest assessment across our four categories. Include any relevant details about booking process, waiting times, or special dietary accommodations. Photos are welcome but not required. We typically publish reviews within two days of verification.

Please note that we do not accept reviews from restaurant owners about their own establishments, nor from staff members of competing businesses. We also decline reviews that focus on a single negative incident like a delayed delivery during a snowstorm, preferring balanced assessments of overall quality and experience.

Understanding UK Asian Food Culture

Asian cuisine in Britain has evolved through decades of immigration, adaptation, and innovation. What you find in UK restaurants often reflects a unique fusion of traditional recipes and local tastes, creating dishes that exist nowhere else in the world.

The British Chinese takeaway, with its particular menu of sweet and sour, chow mein, and curry sauce, represents a distinct culinary tradition developed over generations. Similarly, the UK has developed its own Japanese food culture, often more accessible and casual than fine dining experiences in Tokyo. Understanding these adaptations helps diners appreciate what restaurants are trying to achieve rather than judging them against an impossible standard of homeland authenticity.

We encourage reviewers to assess restaurants on their own merits. A takeaway in a small town delivering reliable, tasty food deserves recognition even if it does not replicate the exact flavours of Shanghai or Seoul. Authenticity matters, but so does accessibility, adaptation to local ingredients, and simply making food that British diners enjoy.

About Our Team and Mission

New Oriental House operates as an independent community project. We accept no advertising, no sponsored placements, and no payments from restaurants. Our running costs come from the personal funds of our founding members, all of whom work day jobs unrelated to the restaurant industry.

Our volunteer moderators include teachers, accountants, students, and healthcare workers who simply love Asian food and want to help others discover great dining experiences. We represent diverse backgrounds ourselves, including British-born Chinese, second-generation immigrants from across Asia, and UK natives who have developed deep appreciation for these cuisines through travel and curiosity.

The mission is straightforward: create a trustworthy resource where people can share and find genuine information about Asian restaurants in the UK. We hope New Oriental House helps preserve excellent independent restaurants, guides diners away from disappointing experiences, and celebrates the enormous contribution Asian communities have made to British food culture.
